Hi, I'm really hoping someone will be able to help me out 🙏.
I have an Ifor Williams 510 trailer which has been fully serviced and everything is 👍. However, I jave a problem with the electrics when using an adaptor from my car to trailer. The lights and brake lights are not working. I've tested the trailer with no adaptor and all is fine, I've tested the car with no adaptor and all is fine but as soon as I use the adaptor connection is lost. I've already brought a second adaptor and same thing happening. The guy who serviced my trailer says its very odd and said he will come out to look at it but I'm trying to keep costs low, so thought I'd see if anyone else has had this issue and if so how did you resolve it? I've used WD40 on pins and I've changed all bulbs. I can't work out why the connection is being lost.
Sorry for long post. TIA

Have you tried a different brand of adapter? It might be the design just doesn't suit the car. Someone with a multi meter will be able to see where it's losing the connection.

Failing that, could it be that the car wiring and adapter are incompatible?

Did you check the pins heads? I kept a flat headed screwdriver in my car for a similar reason. The contacts get pushed together when inserted to connect so after some time they close up slightly so don't have the same contact. Popping a screwdriver and opening the pinheads open a fraction used to solve the problem for me.

Open the pin heads more and spray with WD40 or any contact cleaner before you get someone to come out, if not plug your trailer into another car if it doesn't work then replace the trailer plug, easy to yourself. Hopefully you will save yourself some money.

Is it a 7 to 13 adapter?
I borrow a flat bed to move haylage and they upgraded to a new one.
It has a different 7 on plug and I discovered that the adapter is now an issue. I can get all the lights to work whilst still, but as soon as I start moving there is an issue and all the lights won't work.

The connections come loose between the original plus and adapter.

If it were mine I'd simply change the plug to whatever your is.

Thank you, I'll have a check tonight

Yes it's a 7 to 13. I think you're right, I'm going to get a price to change the plug

The adaptors have always been troublesome. It’s a simple upgrade to upgrade the whole curly electric cable from the junction box under the trailer floor with one with the new 13 pin plug. We replace the cable anyway every couple of years or so on our 510.

Failing that, just a new plug on the old cable would do it.

My trailer guy changed the plug on the trailer so I didn't need an adaptor - a tenner supplied and fitted. Solved the issue.
Agree , I had to use an adapter for a while, it was hopeless forever losing connection, I got my OH to change plug on trailer, they are very cheap and there is a wiring diagram on inside of jockey door if it's an ifor ,so was easily done.

What vehicle are you towing with? Some newer cars electrics are ridiculously over complicated. I know a lot of people with caravans and trailers having issues with SsangYong
Funny enough it is a Ssangyong, however it tows the caravan perfectly fine, with no electrical issues that's because there's no adaptor. Such a headache 😫
