Hi

I am taking my horse to a show soon where we will be stabled overnight. I've never done this before and am trying to work out how to get everything there!

I've ordered shavings from the show but have to take all feed, hay etc. We have a trailer and OH is thinking we should just pile up the hay in the other half of the trailer but I'm worried about it shifting and stressing out the ponio (partition is not solid to the floor). Obviously we would try and secure the load as best we could. Has anyone else travelled like this?

Any ideas most appreciated!

Try taking 6 horses to a 5 day show!

Can the hay not go in the back of the towing car? Cover the seats in a tarp or put it in one of the big bags that building supplies get delivered in - I know that we can get these from our local building merchants.

Elastic bungee straps from a camping shop/Halfords are invaluable. We've got a lorry with forward facing partitions which are half rubber and secure hay and bedding in the far partition by using bungee straps fastened through rings we have screwed in. On a trailer you may be able to get the bungee straps around the framework or at least onto bale string you can fasten around it.
Heavy things like hay and feed seem to travel quite well - beware of anything light like rugs unless it is VERY well secured. They're better in the towing vehicle with you unfortunately!
Scrounge mucking out tools etc from other competitors, but its a good idea to take a big plastic tub for skipping out and some marigolds if you can bear doing it by hand.
Make yourself a list and tick everything off as you pack it.

Try to work out how much stuff you will actually need then you can usually fit things together so they don't move around. By the time you've got hay, feed, buckets, wheelbarrow etc in the trailer it should be pretty jammed in so it wont move and then you can tie it all down for extra security.

all your feed, water, wash buckets etc can be stacked up in one stack then misc small items put in the top.

a big black dust bin i found really handy for small misc items that often are left to 'float' around ! (boots, spare girths, numnhas etc)

Hay, i sometimes see strapped to top of roof?

Feed, make up the feeds you need before you go in carrier bags or big freezer/ sandwich bags is easier then just take 1/2 feed bkts.

Try and think about how your packing things in. pack what you will need first - last, so when your there its easiest to get out quickly.

I found it easiest to scribble down a list, then organise the list into columns by container/box so that i knew what was to go in what/where. I know it sounds anally organised but it kept things stressfree, and in the event of a last minute panick a friend could run back with list and easily find forgotton item straight away rather than searching through 10 boxes/bins.

Hi. As previous posters have said. If you pack it all into the other side of your trailer it won't shift. I have big wooden trunk my other half made for me that fits neatly into other side of trailer and everything except hay fits in it. Shopping bags for feed so you only have to take one bucket. Again lists. Mind you 2 days is not a lot. You will probably take way more than you need and will be much more stream lined next time you go.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm sure I'll wonder what the fuss was about once we've done it (and I've come home not using 90% of the things I've taken!). Will add a dustbin and cargo straps to the shopping list. I think the more I can put in the trailer and not in his truck the happier OH will be!
