Hi does anyone have any advise,

I have recently backed my little section D, he has been a star all the way through until recently. When I was mounting him last monday he shot forward & I kicked his bum so he bucked and bucked until I came off.

He is now petrified of me getting back on him and I have no idea why he was spooked in th first place. I have checked his tack, his teeth and back are good he just lost his confidence in me.

Does anyone have any advice on how I could calm him down so I can mount him easily, I don't want to make this anyworse, but he just won't stand still now!

I used to have this problem with Arch when he was 4.
As soon as I got on him, he legged it bucking in circles! I would come off every time!

Turned out though, that coz he had come from Ireland they just jump on from the ground, so any weight at all on one side Arch would be off!

Havent really got a great deal of advise as youve had his back, teeth and tack checked. He could be abit cold backed, but as he is young it will just take time, it took me about a year b4 I could get on Arch and actually stay on!!

You must be careful as I got dragged badly once when mounting and a horse took off,my foot was stuck in the stirrup and as he went I was pulled under himand he nearly took my nose off.I was by myself and went to find someone to ask for help with the nose bleed I thought I had ,they then told me my nose was cut off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Always have at least one person with you and better to have two one to hold and reassure the horse and maybe giving him polos and the other to leg you up. Practice just being legged up to lean across again until he is confident again. Then make sure you have a really good mounting block ,these are excellent, quite expensive but last at least 15 years mine is that age and perfect.

Good luck and be safe

Have a friend stand at his head and hold him.
When mounting, gradually increase weight in stirrup, if he feels like he's going to move forward then stop and remove the pressure. Just keep it nice and slow - if you do it too quickly you're more likely to land hard in the saddle or knock him.

Hi ya,

Sounds like you just need to be patient to build his trust up again.

Do you think he started bucking becasue you kicked his bum? If so then you need to desentise him to being touched on the bum when mounting.

As to the shooting forward i would def have someone holding him and possibly distracting him with treats until he's confident again.

We teach our youngsters to take a treat from us once we are mounted so that they always stand still while you get on in anticipation of getting a treat. I know some people don't like this method and it can be dangerous if done wrongly or with some horses but it has never caused a problem with our horses. we are teaching my four year old this at the moment. we give him a signal (a tap on the shoulder) and then ask him to bring his head round to get a treat. This can then be fazed out when they learn to stand still.

Agree with cart horse. I had a bad mount with a friends horse who i was told was quiet etc, what she didnt tell me was it was terrible to mount being an ex racehorse so it shot off and dragged me accross the school till it hit the wall.
Make sure you have someone with you until you are confient for sure, and as suggested just put weight on him quietly unil he gets used to it, almost like when a horse is broken. Be paitient and quiet it might take a little while.

Hi

Thanks very much, it was sort of what I was thinking, but had my conifidence knocked a bit not trusting my own judgement!

Will take it nice and steady with a few polos!!

Again thanks for the help!!

Tarquin used to be like that, it was a trust thing initially but made worse as he is v ticklish under his armpits so if I accidently touch him here when I get on he goes mental and doesn't want me to get on. He is a lot better now but always mount from a tall mounting block to prevent this happening. Although the other day I had to get off on a hack and get back on from the ground and he was an angel so must trust me more now.

I have always used the Polo trick if needed as most horses will do anything for a treat!

Carthorse, OMG, what happened to your nose hun?
