sorry quite a long thread, and not sure if this should in this forum?

i have a problem with my mare being very maternally instinctive

my mare has always had a very strong affinity to anything under 13.2 or under 3 years old. especially fillies. she treats them as her foals with more or less exact 'motherly' behaviour you would expect a mare to show if it was her foal. if she gets taken away from the 'foal' she reacts like an mare does when the foal is taken away. she also get VERY jealous of other mares who go out with the above horses....

but my mare has never had a foal! today the behaviour was the worse its ever got. yo decided to turn out my mare next to another mare and a yealing (mare and yearling not related). my mare jumped the 1.2 meter fence to get in with them and then 'took' the yealing for herself to be its 'mother'. she then settled and grazed with the yealing very happyliy - having never met before. she has come into season this week, has shown this behaviour slightly before - but NOT this bad!!!

when we brought her in however, first she wouldnt be caught as she didnt want to leave the yearling, then once caught she reared/bucked/pulled/span to try and get back with the yearling. once in she has not stopped calling. just constant screaming to the yearling and box walking.

so has anyone else ever had a mare like this or know why this may be happening? hormone inbalance??? its rather concerning and dangerous for those of us who are currently handleing her - normally she is a dope on a rope

she isnt being moody or rude while in season, but just extreamly maternal and constantly wanting to have a 'foal' around her.
does anyone know of anything that we can give her/get vet to give her to help - for her sake as well as ours!

Let her have a foal. If anything like kids that should put her of for life. problem solved. Sorry not much help
