Help wanted please!

Hi,
Hope someone can help please.
We have baught a welsh sec A pony called Megan, she is a real sweetie and does not seem to have any vices but when she eats anything she then opens her mouth and seem to be swallowing air, she will do this 5 or 6 times after most mouth fulls,
any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Is she grabbing hold of a door or suchlike and sucking in air? If so she is 'wind sucking'. If it is not this, perhaps you should be asking an equine dentist to have a look to see if her teeth need rasping. Do you know when she last had the dentist?
 
That sounds like she's wind sucking ......without the biting (cribbing)
It's said some horses get a buzz out of it

I have had a couple of windsuckers on my yard and, contrary to what the books say, not one of the others developed it. It would be interesting to hear the views of others on this.
 
It is a problem at some livery yards that's true. I would never allow a windsucker on my yard - it is a huge dislike of mine and I cannot stand them....sorry but there are other yard owners like me

Its yo's that dont want a horse on the yard that wind sucks or cribs ... they destroy doors amongst other things that they can get their teeth into .

I had a cob on loan , owner supposedly forgot to tell me , I took him to a private livery yard, got him settle down came back next day to find that he had literally ate the whole top of the stable door, dh had to fix the door lol ... Not to mention it ruins horses teeth
 
Don't forget wind sucking is a vice, so is definately a concern if you want to sell her at a later date. The previous owners should have declared the pony had a vice (and would expect that to be reflected in the price).

Hi She is seven,
she does not seem to bite on anything, and she only does this after eating. on the internet when i search windsucking it does not seem to mention it in conjunction with eating.
 
She is obviously not cribbing. If she is windsucking, horses can do this quite easily with a mouthful of food. As someone mentioned above it could be a slight choke - what are you feeding her and do you dampen her feed? You havnt mentioned if she has seen a dentist which would be my first port of call. Other than that, if she is quite happy and healthy I wouldnt overly concern yourself. Hope this helps.
 
she lives out and is on grass.
she gets the odd apple or carrot as a treat and some times some hay, but she is not on any dry food as such, on some of the reply people have mentioned a "choke" as i am new to horse owning could someone explain please? sorry if my questions seem silly.
 
Are you sure she is sucking air? Could she just be opening her mouth to try to get the bits out of her gums?

You would know if she was choking as she would have some symptoms ie. collapse, snot coming out of her nose, obvious distress....etc
