We recently purchased a little mare from a lady we believed to be reputable. She had it for sale on behalf of a client and advertised herself as a trader. When mum went to collect the horse she gave her a polo and the little mare went to grab the door (at this point she didn't take any air down). Before mum took the horse she asked the groom (yard owner was away) whether the horse was a cribber and the groom said no. One week later we noticed her cribbing repeatedly when she was tied up. The lady we purchased her from agreed to take her back but won't refund us until she has sold the horse on. Apparently neither she nor its owner knew about the vice.. can't believe that for a second! Has anyone experienced this before? are we entitled to a full refund?

Does your recipt say 'sold as seen' if so then the lady is being veyr good by offering to sell her on for you.

If it says 'sold under warrenty' then you have a leg to stand on.

No, it wouldnt put me off either, Unless i wanted to high level jump/event. Is thehorse right in every other way?
What do you intent to do with the horse?
What I mean is.. Is cribbing the end of the world as we know it?

Does she only crib when she is tied up? Have you looked into the possible physical causes of cribbing? As vices go, it is pretty manageable, and if the horse is what you want in other respects, why not see how you can manage it? Fraser cribs when he is tied up, but only on his rope, never on doors or fences. Pink Powder helps a lot, and it may well ease off once your mare is settled.

she is a lovely horse but I just feel like we've been 'done' because we wouldn't have bought her if we knew and she is certainly worth alot less than we paid for her. Plus I didn't want my youngster to pick it up from her as shes got enough probs already!!

The lady who sold her has literally just rang to say someone is interested in buying her and if her brother who is also in to sell gets sold first we can have the money from his sale so she has been fair to us.

Yes.. but not if they didnt know the horse had them.. And Im not sure the person who sold this horse is a dealer =o)

Miss congeniality.. I Love your horse, I grin everytime you post!!!!

It's not unusual for horses to move home and with the stress of everything begin to crib - If you are happy with the horse try to get on top of the problem straight away and you may find the mare stops doing it once it's settled in.

Ditto what Nailed said, although, the mare being a crib biter wouldn't put me off.

Nor me. Discovered my own horse is what I'd call a mild windsucker about a fortnight after I bought him. No biggy - it doesn't affect either of us.....

Not necessarily. And your youngster should be quite safe. It's highly unlikely that she'll start cribbing.

If you have a look at her front teeth and they are worn they may indicate whether she has done this for a while or not or it could just be the stress of moving.
Incidently...others horses will not pick it up. My cribber lives with 3 others who do not crib

other horses can pick up crib biting we had one on the yard and i noticed some of the others starting to show signs of it too. I personally wouldn't touch a cribber for one thing because they can cause quite alot of destruction to doors and fence posts etc and also they can have more serious problems related to the cribbing

Nailed bog off, I am officially first in the genie queue shoes or no shoes (though granted you might have the advantage on that one!)

Argh!!! Ill fight you for her!!! On Mafia Wars!!

I had a similar problem when i brought my last horse, i also called them to ask about as they to told me he had no vices, they offered to have the horse back.
I turned this offer down and decided that so far in every other way the horse was just what i wanted and to give him a chance, looking back now i am so glad i didnt send him back he is still just what i wanted, even the cribbing now doesnt bother me or him, i would take on another tomorrow he has completly changed my attitude towards them.
He is also turned out with my two year old and they have been inseprable for over a year now (they really are joined at the hip!) and the two year old has shown not one sign of copying him.
Good Luck

Its quite likely then that they were all kept in a similar manner which contributed to the cribbing...such as long periods without forage reulting in boredom or ulcers rather than them copying each other...

Horses do not copy crib biting. If several horses on the same yard do it it is because they have the same management e.g. cereals in diet and stabling. It is not a vice it is a behaviour horses carry out because of the way they are kept. i.e. it is totallly man made. You dont see feral horses crib biting.

Ditto this entirely quite alot of scientific research was done on the matter and it was found that horses do not copy this habbit when managed correctly

Actually I believe I know the horse and seller you are referring to, and even if she was a cribber you still paid a very fair price for her!!

I think the party concerned has been good in what she has done for you, so fingers crossed it works out well for both of you

well if this is the case then why did they not do it until the cribber came onto the yard? i wouldn't have thought they would copy the behaviour either but having seen it i believe it is possible, i'm not saying every horse is going to copy a cribber and i don't think the copiers actually crib bite but they do start to show signs of similar behaviour

web page

At present we have 1 crib biter and 2 dramatic weavers on the yard and not one of the 20 other horses have once copied either behaviour..

I think you are crediting horses with more intelligence than they actually have

I could post half a dozen web pages which say the opposite
