Well my yearling came in this afternoon and whilst I was brushing her she yawned in my face and I spotted these....

So what are they? Friend and I can only think of Bots....any other ideas??

Does she have any buttercups in her field looks like the blisters they get when they come into contact with them

My horse has suffered from these in the summer for years and I've never had a definitive answer from a vet - anything from buttercups to bots to viral infections have been blamed. Given that she usually is also very, very slightly off-colour for a week or two after they first appear I'm inclined to go with viral, something like a variant of equine herpes virus. Just like a cold sore, really. On the vet's advice I treat by covering them with Sudocrem or similar to keep the flies off and allow the sores to heal. They take about two weeks for the skin to grow back over fully.

If you ever get a better answer from a vet, please do le me know, it's been bugging me for years!

I remember having a horse with these. Vets was there at the time I suggested bots & he said no it was some form of bacteria/living organism (bug) that is in the ground.

They have dissapeared from the mare now.

I was certain it was bots but he said "No" & he's the vet not me!

Ditto the buttercups, one I knew was always aggrivated by buttercups.

Could be any other thing he's eating aggrivating him, or just being rubbed sore and blistering with the heat/hard ground?

It could be viral too as some say...I'd say ask your vet for best answer :)

Forgot to say that our mare was in winter so inside, no butter cups or sunshine!

But I am not saying that it may not be these.

As I said I'm not a vet!

Suppoe all you can do is keep an eye on them!

My boy had these but they went within two weeks. I just treated them with sudocream - it was last month so no buttercups in field etc. I just assumed he'd cut his lips on brambles - at least I know now!

a yearling at work had them, in identical places on top and bottom lips and they were on both sides. The vet thought she had eaten something bad causing them almost like burns. we treated with aloe vera and they are clearing up very quickly.

if it helps that is a pic of a supposed bot fly issue in the lip and no they dont look quite the same.
