I have recently moved yards and my gelding is now required to be turned out with some mares. He has always been quite 'full on' when around mares, especially at this time of year! I was wondering if any of you knew of any supplements that I could try to calm his stallion like behaviour? I'm willing to try anything from herbal supplements to vet perscribed drugs (i'm getting desparate!) Any advise would be much appriciated! Thanks

Try monks pepper or chaste tree berry, this can help cool them off. I have also heard that hormonal mare treatments can help too.

Depends on if it is a hormone imbalance and to what extent, as suppliments won't take the sting out of his tail if there is an underlying problem.

However for slightly horney geldings Naff Oestress is well known to help settle geldings a bit, agree tinctures including chasteberry and chamomile may also help, Equimins do one and usually what ever they say on the label....9/10 it usually works, so I'd try it.

However if your horse is a rig, false rig (which can still have the same high levels of testoserone) then after carring out various tests you may want to go down the HRT route, not cheap and not the answer to all your prayers but will certainly take the edge of him and is worth it if all else fails, your vet may suggest Medroxyprogesterone or Tardak injections.

no need to be so defensive!

i was simply pointing out that not every horny gelding is a rig and it might be cheaper to try a herbal supplement before expensive testing

A simple blood test is all that is needed to find out if a horse is a rig, personally I would prefer to do this before paying out for herbal supplements that are not cheap and usually dont work.

Millitiger, I dont think stinkbomb was being defensive she was merely pointing out the horse could be a rig.

This might sound like a silly question but can't you just move him to a field with only geldings in? My boy is a real tart, loves the girls, and I simply can't turn him out with mares. If he is out with girls, you can't catch either him or the girls. He rounds them up, tries to fight the other boys (no he isn't a rig) and is generally a git.

So, he goes out with just boys and ideally with at least another field of boys in between. He has just moved fields and is next to a mare...so far he isn't misbehaving but he's certainly making eyes at her over the fence. Thankfully she's already out with another boy and isn't all that interested in mine!
