As above - I seem to remember seeing on here something for dogs with sticky eyes. It isn't full blown conjunctivitis and I don't really want to go to the vets and get charged 40 quid for something I can get and start to use quicker then the end of today (first appointment!

Thankies.

You can buy over the counter eye drops from a pharmacy, Chloramphenicol by Optrex might help. I have used it on myself and on my horses. There is always the danger it might not be suitable for a dog or that your dog actually has something else wrong with it...

You could just bath his eyes with Optrex which is unlikely to do any harm, or use a mild salt water wipe.

My dog had the same problem earlier this week, caused I think by a run-in with a large toad.

Anyway as camilla says, we were given Maxitrol which is a human preparation but I don't think you can get it without prescription.

Like tracey says, you can get chloramphenicol from the pharmacist, which is great on horses as it's easier to squirt in the eye than the ointment stuff the vet gives you which is risky as the point of the tube can scratch the cornea if you're not careful. But when you buy chloramphenicol, the chemist is trained to quiz you on what you're using it for!

I think you might be thinking of Goldeneyes (or something like that).

I've used over the counter eye drops before for my rabbits and dog, vet said it would be far cheaper from the chemist than getting it from them and is exactly the same stuff

Frankly it could be anything in his eyes from the following list:

the brook
dead petrified beasties in the fields
the muck heap
the hedges
the school..........

He doesn't appear to have given it to the Sweeplet which is why I don't think its conjunctivitis - still one vets bill should let me know..........at least St Sweep

My dog has a recurring problem with sticky eyes and I have put him on biotic biotin and so far it is helping because it boosts the immune system. If it is just a one off problem I would get some drops from the vet. I know people have advised the chemist but imo eyes are not too be messed with and if in any doubt I would get them seen to by a qualified vet.

Gillie had gungey eyes and we went to the vet who said they looked very mildly inflamed and gave him some Maxitrol eye drops for a week and it cleared up completely and the vet was very happy but since finishing the gunge has come back, particularly in the morning when he wakes up.

I used to use an eye ointment on my horses and you could get it over the counter called Broleen (not sure of the spelling) they also do it in drops. Was very effective and never had any side effects on them, considering it was for people.
