I had my horse in a myler low port eggbutt with hooks and he went well in this accepting the contact and not evading my aids but he was on the forehand with it slightly and its not dressage legal.

I changed to the neue schule verbindend as recommended on here from a previous posting as it is dressage legal and will help lift him. The bit is fantastic for this and he is going really well in it apart from when I half halt or put any pressure on the bit. He did halt from my seat and a blocking with my hands in the myler but with the neue schule he completely ignores the blocking with my hands and sets against contact, lifts his head up and opens his mouth. I really don't want to strap his mouth shut as the bit works well other than when I give a gentle rein aid he evades it and panics.

Is there any other similar bits that I could try that give the same lifting effect but that he will accept the contact and respect and accept the bit without evading by lifting his head and opening his mouth? Is this a pain reaction as he has a very fleshy tongue, short fat lips and hates tongue pressure hence the low port myler. My bit is the 5 3/4 70mm loose ring, 12mm diameter bit. His myler is the same thickness as he has fleshy lips so a wider bit doesn't fit well. Would a wider bit be milder or would it just be too big for his fat lips??!

Sorry for the long post!! Donuts for those that read this far!!! :p

when were his teeth last looked at? he could have some sharp bits that he is feeling when u give him rein aids?? my was pullin against the bit when her teeth were overdue and it turned out she had some sharp bits. good luck x

Thank you for replies. He had his teeth done in May and the resistance has come since using the NS. He was heavy leaning on the myler but the NS lightened that and is dressage legal.

I did think about going back to the myler without the hooks being used so will give that a go tomorrow to see what response we get. I may have to just use the NS for dressage. Unless there is another bit that helps lift the forehand and works like the myler low port?
