Georgie was kicked a couple of weeks ago on a hind leg. Nothing to serious, slighlty sore for a couple of days, a bit of heat and swelling and a tiny cut. The heat and swelling have gone and hes not lame. However this cut just is'nt healing. Its about the size of 5p piece. Its now proud. It scabs over, then the scab drops off and it isnt healing underneath.
I'm sure I read on here that honey (was it Manuka<sp>) that was very good for things like this?

I know several people who swear by honey for healing nasty wounds. Manuka is supposed to be the most effective.

Does your horse go out? My friend had the same problem. A cut healed to the size of a 5p and would not heal - it was magpies! She caught them pecking at it. It was the size of a 5p for months and she just could not understand why until one gay she caught the magpies pecking it. I don't know how she overcame the problem. If she calls round i will ask her - she never answers her phone!
Aparantly honey does heal. I had a friend whose horse had a cut on its leg. An old military man treated it with honey and it did help. He swears by it.
Good luck and watch out for the magpies!

Manuka honey is much better than normal honey as the bees feed on tea tree which is why it has such good antibacterial properties ( can you tell i work in a heath food shop!!) it also contains a higher proportion of live enzymes than normal honey. I think when you use it on a wound it is best to apply it on gauze and then cover it over, we sell a lot of it to elderly people to use on leg ulcers and have seen some amazing results. It is quite expensive about £8 for 500g and comes in different strengths but for what you are looking for i would reccomend a 10 or higher UMF.

I can show you some before and afters, I just used pure honey, not manuka.

I kept the wound covered - used pieces of nappy as a dressing (way cheaper than animalintex) and covered the pad with honey, bandaged on to the affected area - and left it on for 48 hours a time.

This was the result of ours...

And the hair then grew back totally - no scar apparent. It took all the proud flesh down and everything.

It just takes a bit longer to heal covered, but it does heal and keeps flies out.

you had better get the vet to check it out? some wounds dont heal because of foreign bodies, my horse was kicked with a small wound and it would not heal - turn out he had fractured his splint bone!
