Hi can anyone help? we have an horse who always gets a sore mouth that cracks and gets sore, the rider is very soft with her hands and he is in just a plain snaffle. He tends to paddy alot and nap because he hates going stright so this is when he tends to get sore. My question is is there anyting on the market to harden up the corners of his mouth? vet has said just ride him through it and it should harden up but it hasn't, someone has even said pile cream

(not tried that going to check with the vet). Thank you open to any suggestions.

just a note - i changed my horses bit froma metal eggbutt snaffle to a straightbar happy mouth and his mouth got sore it was v weird , slapped on lots of vaseline before and after riding

oo thats interesting stuiff, millies mouth is the same, like parisianne girl i just use vasaline in the corners before evry ride.

I had simial problem this year.
I was advised rest it and Bongela. This worked but whenever I put bit back in her nouth it cracked again.
I tried Glynol??(gold label) it dried it up and helped it heal. Then lashed vaseline on the bit and corners of mouth before riding.
I also rode in a pelham for jumping which I don't really need but meant I was never pulling in her mouth when it was healing.
I have also been advised to use pile cream.
Oh and re. the happy mouth/rubber bits - my ed said they were most likely to cause cracks as they can drag on the skin and any teeth marks leave sharp edges.
Good luck!

Rubber tends to 'grab and pull' the tongue and lips, a nylon or vulcanite would be better than rubber.

keep using vaseline (has to be vaseline not cheap petroleum jelly). The happy mouth bits and rubber cause more friction than stainless steel bits. His mouth should eventually toughen up!!
