Horses, not mine (unfortunately)

What can I do with the 5yo to help build his hind quarters. He is really quite weak behind and his ridden work probably isn't up to helping so I wondered what the best thing I could do on the lunge would be.

What is the best gadget for helping them work through from behind and actually use themselves so he can muscle up a bit?

Ridden work is going nicely and coming along well but it is hard for him on the flat because he lacks muscle and because he finds flat work hard I can't get him to work brilliantly so he continues to lack muscle. It's a bit of a vicious circle so I'm just looking for something to help him along a bit really!

not helpful at all... but i had to click on this thread due to pure curiosity. :D

will watch this thread though as it might be useful to me and my youngster too lol

poles on the ground for lunging or ridden? Or both? I'm a thicko I'm afraid!

Maybe I should give it a go. I certainly need a tighter tummy. I definitely don't need a bigger bum though. Hmmm

Find the steepest hill near you and walk up it but collect your horse whilst you walk up in then walk down it again. Do this on a regular basis then when you feel your horse progressing trot up it but still be very collected up the hill, you really need to try and get your horses quarters underneath him you will really see an improvent.

We have a very steep hill near us and my horse gets trotted up there on a regular basis to keep him fit and muscled.

You can do it ridden, or you can do it on a long line :)

Also, four poles with the ends meeting at one point (place them like at the points of a clock - three, six, nine and twelve :D). Raise the ends. Work your way round, each way. Also work in and out of them, e.g. do one, miss one, etc.

Urmm. I live in north Cambridgeshire. AKA the fens. I think the nearest hill is about 50 miles away! I also originally hail from Norfolk. I must have something about flat places! Next time I'm anywhere near a hill I will definitely give it a go though :)

Sounds like you have a lot of exercises for small bums! Hehe. I shouldn't find it funny but I do.

Seriously though, these sound great and I will def have a go tomorrow.

Looks like your going to need a very big spade and a big field to make a hill :)

Ah, good job the OH loves me! I shall put him to work. Or possibly just stick with the poles

And Mrs M I think it is sent to try us. No horsey girl has a small bum (not even my skinny skinny friend) and that is bad but your horse has a small bum? Obviously it needs to be larger. I want to swap places with brown horse!

That's one way to get a small bum....:D

Hmmm. If you had seen the size of my bum you might not say that! Even if I starved myself for two months and made a mountain with just a spade I'd still have a big bottom. I'd just be a skeleton with a big horsey bum stuck on!

Great idea make the horse make the hill then your horses bum will be much bigger :) Actually for animal cruelty reasons, ask the horse nicely to make the hill :p

I think he'd say no. He is of the opinion that I do the work whilst he swans about. Blooming horse has ideas above his station!

Well I was going to say turn out on a hill, it keeps them working when their mooching. Mind you perhaps you could do that after you build your hill :D

I agree once ur hill is built:p, then the big bum process can begin.I've found that if u lunge a horse on a small slope will work and just continually trotting up hills. hope this helps!:D

The hill in Haddenham is quite good if you want a long slow hill. The one at Witcham is a little sharper and there are some steep (for the Fens) droves around there so you can canter up!

O about the same probably. I haven't done as much work as I should have.

You'll be pleased to hear that my bottom is coming along nicely though. All the chocolate over Christmas did it wonders :p
