Evening everyone!

Have some questions for you guys to help me discuss!

I have a 12year old chestnut mare; who can be stressy, hormonal & very buzzy to ride & deal with! But loves her food; sleep & isn't naughty what so ever!

Before Christmas 2 new horses moved in who were very noisy & caused a distruption!

My girl is very very unsettled atm, not keen on eating her hay & barely drinking. She usually sleeps at night as you can tell in her stable & does around 5 droppings per night.

Recently she's been digging all her bed up & churning her stable up, obviously not sleeping! She had an argument with her next door neighbour who decided to kick out at the door as he was standing their so my girl was very worried as a result!

Now she's usually very full of life & buzzy and doesn't like to hang around! Especially jumping- untill recently where she has started stopping & to tonight riding her, she completely out of character for no reason reared a few times, and has started this sort of behaviour for a few weeks! She doesn't look in pain & doesn't seen angry just very worried & unsettled! She's had her back/teeth etc done few weeks ago!
She's also becoming a handful when handling her!
I really don't know what's up with her & on discussion from several friends I'm keeping my eye out for colic signs etc! I slightly think it's hormonal related as these new horses caused her a big upset & brought her Ito season early January!
I'm calling the vets tomorrow but ts good to get advice from other knowledgable people!
She's being checkled at 4:30am by a lovely friend before she goes to work!

Are the new horses geldings by any chance.

I have an old mare who is sweet and easy, but put her with a gelding in the field or next door in the yard and she is a right royal pain in the bottom.

Is she in a box that they can see into? I had a mare that hated boys looking at her and never really settled until I moved her to my back yard with closed stables where she was happy with her privacy, possibly put rugs up to screen her from them, if she is not relaxed in her box it will be reflected in her work and may get worse.

One of them is- but he's a small distance anyway so she can't see him but he is very noisy. Bring in/ turnout times etc.

Really concerned as she loves being with horses & although is argumentative she is never naughty to the extent she does something like rear

She's surrounded by mares at the minute. The same ones for the last 2 years apart from one of the two new ones who is an old cushings pony who is the quiet one

I think some mares are having strong seasons at the moment, maybe because of the relatively mild weather for this time of year. Or a butterfly flapping its wings in South Africa. I don't know, but that's my excuse. If my horse is having a strong season, she's a neurotic, anxious headcase. Today, she was making sure I looked like a tool in front of a new livery. I swear to God, my horse is really well behaved and sensible. Honest.

See how yours is next week. Mine should have found her sanity again.

I agree with the above as my mare yet again is uncontrollable. The mild winter she's come into season, she usually is a quiet sort of mare, but has gotten worse over the years as you no longer have a set season. She's started barging you out of the way when she comes out of her stable. This has happened over over 8 years, she has never changed, have tried head collar with metal chain that worked for a little while. At the moment I'm trying the Osestes (I know I haven't spelt it right) this is the 2nd day and she threw a big tantrum about it being her feed. My Hubby wants to have her put down, I don't want to breed from her. But I did promise my son that I would take care of her for the rest of her life and she's coming up 9. My Hubby says I've spoilt her, but I haven't, she is who she is and her mum was just the same.

Thanks guys; had suspected hormone related. Shes just been so worried/anxious for a long time :( everytime I ride her a little noise can freak her out! Might see if I can try regumate.
Roll on summer guys!!
