Hello, I was wondering if someone could please help and give me a little advice. Last September I bought Dottie, my 14hh tradition coloured cob. She is an absolute angel, nothing fazes her and she is a dream to own. She is four years old and has the head of a 15 year old on young shoulders!! At the moment, I would describe her as a happy hacker, she is very fit, we go on 10+ mile hacks regularly. I now want to improver her schooling so I can enter local dressage and ridden shows in the summer. My issue is I know she is still young hence her having balance troubles. Walk and trot she is fine, we can do serpentines; small and large circles etc but canter is a completely different story, she leans in on a large circle, cannot stick to the track without falling in and just generally struggles with the gate when in the school (when out hacking she is fine in canter)
I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem with a upwind horse and what schooling or lunging exercises helped you? Thanks in advance 😊

At 4 they are usually unable to carry themselves balanced in canter but its good she is fit as a starting ground. Half halting is a good way to sit them on their hocks but she wont be as able to do this when only four.

Alot of trot and canter transitions is the best way to begin with. When she canters nicely then when she goes unbalanced again i would come back to trot and steady her up. Its as if you use the trot transitition as the half halt.
