im struggling to find a bit that i can use daily on my connemara, i show him in a pelham which he is quite happy about but he finds it too much in his mouth for everyday use such as hacking and jumping.
i was wondering if you could advise me on bits to try, i have tried him in a tom thumb which he quite liked at first then it became too strong to jump in, hes too strong in a normal and french link snaffle but hates the action of the dutch gag, i know his back is ok and his teeth are fine and he doesnt get enough feed to make him silly but he is a very happy type of pony?

any help appreciated!

Hanging cheek?
A kimblewick is a single rein version of the pelham
Dr Bristol?

It's similar to a pelham, but no-where near as much leverage. You can get slotted versions where you can vary the amount. Without slots it's very similar to a hanging cheek but with a small amount of curb, not as much as a pelham.

I suggested it because your Horse is happy with a pelham, but it's too much for everyday and jumping. A kimblewick has a very similar, but less strong action. A hanging cheek snaffle with the same mouthpiece (I'm thinking mullen??) might be an option (as it's similar to the pelham but no curb action and again a lot less leverage) but I thought possibly not strong enough if the tom thumb wasn't enough.

Oh...do you use your pelham with one rein or two? If you use roundings and one rein, then try 2 reins. That way you basically have a snaffle, and a curb when you need it. Also, a plain mullen mouth snaffle? Maybe your Horse just doesn't like jointed bits?

I have a hanging cheek mullen mouth myler for my conn x with a teeny mouth. As above she doesnt like some action & is very fussy. She likes this & even though its a mild bit (& dressage legal) cause she is strong sometimes i put her in a grackle to make it quite even. I found i can now do x-country in it. I also have another bit a full cheek snaffle with copper roller that again she loves & with the grackle means i can use a milder bit. She has a 4.5" mouth so theres no room for thick bits or alot of movement.
