Agree with LL, always send them forward, ignore what the heads doin to start with and get the body to go where u want. Vary what u do as they get stale very quickly in the school (or so i've found anyway!!).

FORWARD. Everything must be forward, doesn't matter how fast, just forward! If your not 100% confident then have concret ground work so everything should run smoothly, and you on his back should be no biggie.

my 3 year old is turned away at the mo but i backed her within 6 weeks - from putting bit in to riding out

you need to lunge in a surcingle first, then when she is ready progress to a saddle. we sat on Indy bareback at first and then progressed to saddle after 2/3 times.

The main pieces of advice I can say is
* make sure that you have solid groundwork
* dont rush it - if it takes 6 weeks , 12 weeks or more - if you rush your orse at this stage you could ruin it for life

and finally - always ask for help - dont try and muddle through on your own if you dont know what your doing as that is how accidents happen and things go wrong.

There, lecture finished Lol and I hope we will get regular updates as to how your getting on - dont forget theres a lot of knowledgable people on here - use them

I got very confused when I broke my first youngster in - every one tells you something different!! I just went with what made sense and after a little trial and error found what worked with her and went from there. The best tip I can give u is don't underestimate the power of groundwork!!!!! Also, if you try something and it doesn;t work don't be afraid to try again or use a different appraoch. Different methods work for different horses so if one thing doesn't work then another one will
