Hi,

Haven't been on for aaaages.

Bit of a back ground first.

I have owned Tyler since 2007. He is an Irish Draught X, and approximately 13 years old. When I bought him, the 5 stage vetting highlighted potential problems with foot conformation. He has had lameness on and off since then. Most of it resolved by box rest and gentle exercise.

I had him out on loan for a year, the gentleman loaning him being fully aware of the problems that could occur and aware that at any point he could return Tyler to me. After a year, Tyler did come back after being diagnosed with degeneration of the Navicular bone. X-rays and various tolerence tests were initially shown by one vet to be to such an extent that Tyler was no longer suitable for riding (Hurrah says Tyler - I can retire). When I got Tyler back, I had my own vet out the next day who advised that Tyler would be lightly hack as long as it was soft ground and I monitored him for how comfortable he was.

That was last year in August. I havent ridden or worked Tyler at all over the winter. He has lazed about in his field and stable. Generally enjoying himself.

I am looking for advice as to if it is suitable to bring a horse back into work, I woudl ride him 1-2 a week hacking around the local forest. Nothing strenous.

I am in no rush and just want to do it correctly.

Out on grass livery with no feed at the moment (he is a very good doer) and no supplements. Corrective shoeing being done by farrier.

Thanks in advance,

Jen

I'd say short walks to start with building it up.
Riding twice a week build it up very slowly.
He will tell you what he is coping with and if it gets too much.

Good luck
Enjoy your meanders!
