I have had my New Forest for a week now and he came with a Dutch Gag with 3 rings. It was a 4.5 inch bit and seemed to be pinching him a little so I bought a 5". The mouthpiece seems the right size now but the rings seem to be digging into his face a little when I don't have a contact. Is this right? I'm tempted just to try a normal snaffle as I think he only had the dutch gag when he was owned by a little girl who found him a little strong when jumping. He does seem to be going nicely in this bit, on the second ring but just concerned that it is rubbing a bit.

I think you can bend the top rings away from the face slightly - seen a horse with this to stop it rubbing. Might need some sort of vice and someone strong though!

Is this any good? (Excuse HORRIBLE bridle with broken cheekpiece!!)

The lady at our local tack shop say that some manufacturers bend them out so they fit properly and not dig in, whereas some manufacturers don't bother! xx

Thanks for the pic. The bottom rings on mine just don't seem to sit like that, they are closer to his face. I think I'll try a hanging cheek as that has a little poll pressure I think.
