After doing a perfect impersonation of a girraff during our showjumping yesterday!! (schooling quietly at home) I was wondering would a calmer help - my mare is five and has only been out about 3 times but was extremely unattentive and excitable. Looking up supplement websites saw calmers in syringe form and was interested in how these worked - would love to hear your experiences/recommendations!
Thanks

I've got the equine america one and can't say I've really noticed a difference when using it. My mare has just come of a magnesium supplement and has suddenly gone crazy, the magnesium was great at calming her down. Might be an idea to think about a feed calmer? Or your mare is five, she might settle down on her own, when she gets used to the going out and competing lark.

At the yard two owners use Nomad by Badmington Feeds and the results have been good....one is a nervous TB/Arab and the other a TB (shown in large riding horse and side saddle classes)horse that is shown county level and has let himself down a few times with displays of bucking, etc and this has been due to his temperament and not due to any other reason as checked....just hacking out with her the change is good and alot more relaxed in his box, manners and so on ....might be worth ago and about £15 approx fed at 2 scoops aday!

Magnesium sulphate is in most calmers nowadays including the Equine America one which is So Kalm plus. This comes in powdered form as well as in a syringe which can be used on the day of a competition. Ex Stress has also been recommended on this forum. Just make sure you don't use a calmer that contains valerian if you are going to compete as this is a prohibited substance under competition rules.

I suppose its a matter of trial and error (though probably more error - mind you if things go wrong I can always blame the calmer instead of myself!) Im living in Ireland so its sometimes harder to get some of the specail feeds - postage on a 20kg bag can work out a bit expensive!! thats why I was thinking of a supplement/syringe type.

I tried the NAF Magic Calmer - and it made my horse worse! He started running backwards at - shock horror - white sheep. Was recommended to try Magnesium Oxide (Mag Ox) and it was far more effective.
