Help! My mare has started the frustrating habbit of pulling back and refusing to be tied up. She has now started to even resent being caught and I've had a few painful kicks from her in the stable when she doesn't want to be handled. The tieing up problem started a few weeks after I got her and for no apparent reason, she wont load either and I wonder if she is claustrophobic??? Vet says no physical problems to explain this sudden poor behaviour. I have tried the nicey nicey 'loop rope thru twine' and the 'nasty tie to metal post' to no avail - just many broken ropes and head-collars! Any advice please! Many thanks.

i have a horse which pulls back when tied up she is on nice and easy calmer and we sometime shove a buket of food by her to keep her still. we are trying the i'll stand here and wont give in game, and eventually she settles down

with my own ponnie i found that if you have a little treat and if she is running away then i used to have to run after her and every time she went to run i shoowed her on it usefull if you have a conner where they feel safe enough to be caught but dont pin them or else they will most likely run off again.

Hi, For the first point, Buy her a 'bungie' type rope. (like a normal lead rope but with an elasticated bit) Then when she pulls back she will meet no resistance - they soon give up then!

Edited because I replied to Marble effect, not dazedandconfused.
Marble Effect, btw, it is quite hard to understand what you are saying! Maybe I am just old.....

i have a mare that pulls back - she's usually fine until someone makes a sudden noise or movement and then pulls back rapidly until the baler twine/rope/headcollar snaps. i have tried the bungee rope but they do eventually snap and can then go flying across the yard at your horse at a rate of knots if your not careful! I have heard they work for some though. The other suggestion i was told about which may work if your horse has only just started doing it is to thread a lunge line through the tie ring and when your horse goes backwards apply just gentle but firm pressure until the horse stops and then slacken it so the horse learns that going backwards is uncomfortable but standing still is not. Good luck - i've had my mare 10yrs now and its the one quirk i've never cracked!
