Hi, i have a 3 year old Shire gelding who presented with cow pat like diarrhea last Tuesday. He had and still has no other signs really, he was a little sleepy for a day or 2 but n signs of colic or any distress etc. No tempurature, vet's first suggestions as there were no 'ill' symptoms were Pre biotics or Kaolin. after another 2 days of no change i got some kaolin which i am only feeding at half dose and took a feacal sample in for worm count, which found non at all. he is more solid now but is still on Kaolin, still no other symptom, eating and drinking as normal, shiney coat, as lively as a baby shire gets (he's very lazy)......Any one got any ideas? Going to take him off the kaolin today and see how he is without, if no better vets wants to come and take some bloods. Just concerned i'll be paying out loads in vets bills for them to not find anything, very annoying. I have had him since 7 months and has been wormed as i think he should be and the same as my other 2 (they are fine) He has always struggled with his tummy but sinse changing he diet from a youngstock mix to kwikbeet, grass chaff and feedmark original balancer he put on weight and things settled down until now. I haven't been able to put wieght on him this year really and has a very dipped back (always has), but always put that down to his rapid growhth; 16.2hh buy 2 and 18hh by 3, he's not thin but could do with some condition. he has also been a little more clingy and nervous over that last few weeks/months. He was last wormed about 2 weeks ago with animec and just before did have the occassional loose poo, but last week started everyone runny. Could it still be worms even though count clear, tape worm or lavea? could he have become resistant to any wormer? could it be gut flora/bacteria out of balance? i have upted his supplement from 3 to 4 scoops (dropped it after winter) as it has conditioning ingrediant and probiotics. Only slight change he has was put on to paddaock that was fertilised about 2 - 3 months ago about 3 weeks ago, it's not lush by any means due to no rain but it does have growth on it, vet thought it may be this but i took him off this last Wednesday and made no difference, i thought it would clear up with in 12 - 24 hours if it was that, plus it was more than just loose 'grassy' poo, but vet said it may have up set his gut flora and take a while to settle down. I've still got an incling it's to do with worms just have a feelng; a friend of mine had a pony a few years ago that would always get slight diarrhea just before he was due worming and it would have a chemical small, just like Ivor's has, but would stop as soon as he was wormed. Poo's are picked up at least once a day, and land is stip grazed, don't have enough room to completely rest it, horses live out 24/7 and i've been there 7 years, first time it's been fetilised. Can't think of any more info. any advice greatly appretiated as really want him to be better and feeling 100%

I would go with what the vet said, it is possible the fertiliser has upset his gut balance. Surely, if it was worms, I think you're meaning encysted worms emerging, they would have been picked up on the worm count.
I would try another probiotic for a week or so to help his tum deal with the new grass. It may look poor but with the rain and sunshine, it will be growing faster and richer because of the fertiliser.
Hope this helps and if not I'd get the vet to do some tests.

My boy had chronic diarrhea (which eventually we found out on post mortem was caused by melanomas). For 4 months we could only control it.

The things my vet did to exlcude was

Stable and only feed hay (eliminate grass)

worm count, but worm with 5 day panacur guard anyway as Encysted Red Worm does not show on worm counts and can cause diarrhea.

blood test

Probiotics and Kaolin

Rectal biopsy

Evenutally he was put on steroids and codiene as it was the only thing that controlled it (eventually melanomas multiplied until he could not pass anything)

thanks both, he has been off hte grass for 4 days now and although has improved he is still on kaolin so can't really tell, didn't give him any today so will should see tomorrow if he still has the problem. Forgot to mention when he eats his dinner his tummy rumbles like thunder! Prehaps it is just a probiotic thing, i'll see how he goes for a couple of days and call the vet if needed. thanks again.

My old horse had issues with diarrhea last year and was eventually diagnoised with IBS.

The vet did bloods, rectal biopsy, probiotic, worm count but wormed with 5 day panacur incase of red worms and was also given codeine to help dry him up.

He was on long term steroids for around 8 months before we managed to get him to a small enough dose that we managed to wean him off them before he was PTS in Dec for a pelvic issue.
