hey

you helpful lot
I have an 18 month old Retriever male who i have major issues putting him into the car.
He is grand when we have been somewhere and on the way home but that outward journey is a problem.

Any suggestions would be great. I have spent some time in the back of my car and i can get him in but it does take some time.

Thank you

Nicky

What exactly is the issue? What type of car do you have? Are you asking him to jump in the back or on the back seats?
Can you give us more information to be able to help possibly?

I'd rule out pain, IE a tweak, if he doesn't like jumping. I wouldn't allow a large breed prone to joint problems jump in and out of a high-based car of their own accord until 12 months to be on the safe side (not assuming he's been doing this :))
Or bad association, IE fear of vets etc.
I'd be doing a lot of short journeys somewhere fun, and feeding him in the car.

try a crate in the boot so he has his personnel space or a companion, I havea Lintran which is excellent, but have also used sky/vari crates which they love.

hi sorry about not being clear

i have a nissan note which is not especially big he does not like to get into the back seat or the boot so i borrowed my hubbys rav 4 (any excuse lol) and still the same thing
although he will get in eventually it can take about 10 minutes. we always go somewhere fun in the car :D
he loves to stand on two legs, not sure if that meant he was human but when i dance :o:o with music and my kids he comes and jumps up to join in :o maybe too much info?? :D

i do have a seat belt for him if he does go on the back seat but as yet i have only had him in my hubbys car as i tend to give up with mine and walk locally

i know what kelly marks would say :D:D

I have a similar issue, we rehomed our springer 2 years ago, she's 3 now, I have to lift her in the car, she does dead dog impression and I have to peel her off the road/pavement to lift her in. She's obviously has issues I don't know what's happened to her in the past as we rehomed her, I know one of her previous owners (she had about 3 in the 1st year of her life) used to lock her in a cupboard when they had visitors for some reason, I have no idea as she doesn't jump up or anything like that and she's not a typical nutty springer, brilliant with kids and people, sometimes takes a dislike to certain dogs when she's on the lead other than that she's an angel.

I just pick her up put her in, once she's in she's fine, she doesn't get stressed but just goes very quiet, won't have a treat off me so that won't work to entice her in, I did throw the lead across the seat and run round once and she climbed in herself when she could see me the other side, I just think there 's no point with the hassle I'll ust pick her up.

Different with a big dog like yours though, they do steps and ramps now you could try. I used to have a German Shephard and a terrier cross who used to jump in the car no problem, they didn't even hesitate, so I've decided that its not my fault, its nothing I've done, its her past issues.

Good luck

thank you for your ideas. i only have this dog for just over 4 weeks now and then he is going for his training to be a guide dog :D it is very strange i have had him for coming up to two weeks now and he is funny about a few things the car is a big one and i would hate for him to be trained and be a problem for his handler .

i shall do a bit more time sitting in the back and lots of rewards he is very clever but also quite stubborn :D
