Help with lunging

[Footlights]

Being an ex-racer he is fab at long reining but I am really struggling to get him to lunge. Once one a circle he is great, but when I ask him to go out on circle he just pivots and faces me, and whatever I do he just turns on forehand or walks backwards..

I have had someone leading him round which works great, but when I am by myself I really struggle. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Start on the long reins then bring him onto a circle and lunge on the two reins, he will be unable to turn in if you keep the outside rein. Get him trotting forward until he settles. A few times like this and he should start to understand, lungeing with two reins is more effective and gets them working better from behind.
