Hi all I’m at a bit of a loss so would appreciate opinions.
Shortened version of the story… 13yr old Welsh mare, bought in March for my daughter. Was girthy when we got her but only when the saddle initially went on and if you fiddle with her rugs. Obviously did consider ulcers at the time but she was absolutely fine otherwise and seemed much better after a saddle check and new girth. Over the course of the summer has been fine, no worse than this. Last month or so she seems worse…now kicks if you try and to up the straps etc and very grumpy in the stable.
She has white marks on her withers from a poorly fitting rug in the past, it’s not the saddle area as the saddle fitters (we have had 2 different ones out!) both agreed it was a rug mark not saddle….so I kind of put the rug issue down to pain from before.
She has always been mareish…she kicks of a horse gets too close to her bum on the ground, rarely under saddle. Always managed fine with oestress supplement and just being aware so nobody gets too close. The last month she has been kicking out in her stable at random, can just be munching hay and she kicks out and squeals. worse if horses go past the stable. I’m 99% sure she is still cycling as she shows all the signs of this.
Had the vet out last week to check her over, scanned ovaries and nothing obviously wrong. She has been started on a 14 day regumate trial, we are now day 4. She is just the same, a lot better outside the stable but in the stable she’s very angry…just pulls faces kicks out and squeals at times. She did actually kick out and squeal going to the field this morning too. Which is new!
I noticed today her saddle is slipping when my daughter rides so I will get the saddler out asap…she has been good to ride just flicks her head a bit going into canter but she is quite fresh too.
Limited turnout the last 2 weeks with the weather ice etc…she is being exercised most days and horse walker once or twice a day and loose schooled. She’s a bit stiff coming out the box under saddle so she is on a joint supplement, given her age could easily by some arthritis? She is stabled a lot more than she was over summer so I do put some of this down to being in more.
I’m just not convinced it’s hormones…the vet said to do the 14 day trial then possibly scope for ulcers and work up…which sounds sensible but honestly not fun seeing her distressed in her box.
Would the regumate do much this soon? She would be due to cycle next week…if she was.
Sorry for the rambling…just not sure where to go now. Thanks
