Hi, I've just bought a mare this weekend who's foal was weaned from her 9 days ago. How much Epsom salts should I put into her feed? Am I suppose to restrict her hard feed? Is Epsom salts ok into chaff/ hi fi and do I add the salts dry? What symptoms should I be looking out for re mastitis? Is it advisable to do gentle exersice such as walking her in hand? I haven't got a saddle yet so won't be riding. The was approx 16 weeks old when weaned (not my foal) which I thought was early so also need any more advice re exercise for the mare, how much or how little etc all help glady received thanks

Hi That is very early to wean a foal unless there was a problem. You would not normally wean until 5 months. Turn the mare out as much as possible so she walks the bag down you do not want her standing in a box - we do not give them anything to dry them off but you can give Epsom Salts but only in small quantities. If she is used to hard feed keep it simple and small is she looking well or skinny having had a foal on her? Let her relax into her new surroundings get over weaning and start very gently with work.
