I am trying various myler bits for my very strong cob x and am looking at the mullen barrel and mullen triple barrel both with eggbutt cheeks. I have ordered these without hooks for trialling but am now wondering if I should have ordered them with hooks. Can anyone explain what difference with regards to leverage/pressure the hooks make, and whether the cheekpieces with hooks can be used without them by attaching the reins to the main ring rather than through the hooks. My horse is always on the forehand and very strong and I do realise this is a schooling issue but she is a happy hacker/happy hunter and only gets schooled whilst out hacking.

You used to be able to email Myler for advice via the Toklat website. Have a look on there and see if you still can. They're quite helpful

The hooks provide more leverage that the plain D rings but I don't see any reason why you couldn't just not use the hooks.

Yes you can use them without. You would still put the cheekpiece through the top one then attach the rein to the main ring. Using the hooks gives you a mild gag action. You can also attach a curb chain to them.

I ride George in a myler mullen mouth hanging cheek which has really got him off his forehand and helped him to balance. I was also looking for one for faster work and I'm currently trying the ported mullen (MB06) with eggbutt cheeks and hooks. I got mine on hire from Scallywags Equine http://www.scallywagsequinesupplies.co.uk/ and the lady there has been so helpful helping me with which bit to try. She said that If I didn't need the extra strength it was ok just to put the reins on the eggbutt and not in the slot. So I will probably do that for hacking, and put them in the slot with a curb for jumping and xc.

Brilliant thank you, I was a bit concerned that if I attach the reins to the main ring instead of the hooks the bit might not work correctly. I might be able to use the bit without the hooks for normal everyday work & use the hooks for xc and hunting as you suggest.
