Hi everyone, Im just after a bit of advice. I have recently taken on a pony who is very nervous, shes 8 years old and has been backed, but hasnt been ridden in a few years. Shes been turned away for a couple of years and not had much done with her. Where do i start with her? Should i just be bringing her in and getting her used to being groomed and lifting feet, shes ok with her front feet but messes about when you try and lift her hind legs. Thanks for any help, i have had horses before but not had to start from near scratch with them.

Thanks again :)

I love working with nervous horses. It's my favourite part of my job, when you win their trust it's just the best feeling ever.
Yes just spend time with her, as much as possible. Never push her too far. If she's uncomfortable with something hop back a step.
Go visit her in the field or stable for no reason- just to have a chat and a scratch to help build a bond.
It's all about time, patience and staying calm :)
Good luck. X

Sounds very similar to my boy!! Bought him on the cheap as an 8year old who needed re-backing with VERY nervous disposition. He spent the first few days in the stable (was a b****r to catch, and had had the panacur 5 day wormer). I literally just gave him treats and took him out the stable walked him around a bit, groomed areas he was comfortable with. He then went out in a little paddock on his own and I just sat there, or stood by the gate - luckily was in the summer! When he finally went out into the field I could catch him, albeit with bribery of a carrot and headcoller still on.

You sound like you are on the right track as you are doign what I did and now a year and a half later I have a lovely little pony. Just take your time with her, dont push her and try to gain her trust.

When it comes to backing make sure you have a proffessional, or someone with experiance, with you if you do not feel capable, as this will set her up for the rest of her ridden life.
