I have read in horsey magazines and heard from other people that putting oils in horse's feed is good for general health. There seem to be so many on the market so I was wondering what people use and what they think is the best type. I also put this in the New Lounge. Thanks!!!

All the common oils - soya, linseed, corn, rapeseed, sunflower etc - will supply extra calories and give good coat shine. The ratio of Omega 3s to Omega 6s varies between them though - linseed is generally thought to be the best in that respect, rapeseed has a good ratio too.

I feed supermarket veg oil (rapeseed oil) because it's cheap and I'm tight!

Nutritional experts generally suggest that if you are feeding a lot of oil for weight gain then you should supplement with additional Vit E and Selenium. There seems to be some difference of opinion of what 'a lot' is - I have seen figures varying from about 300ml to 500ml. At present I give one of mine 400ml a day without supplementation.

We give our yearling Carron Oil on the advice of an old Irish racehorse trainer - and it certainly seems to do the job! He has kept weight on so well this winter in spite of being out 24/7, looks stunning, and has an amazing gloss to his coat

I feed linseed - for coat, condition, joints and digestion and black sunflower seeds for coat and very hard feet - plus good source of protein.

Are these just black sunflower seeds you can buy from supermarket?
I only ask as one of ours suffered a tendon injury a couple of yrs back, leaving his other fore hoof very flat and his feet are always cracking big time.
