I am looking a a youngster lady says on passport he is 3 years old but he looks more 2 1/2 he is now standing at around 13.2 my first question is you think it would be ok to think he will make 14hh-14.2? His mums a cob and dad a shire I have been told but they are unregistered on his passport. He does look very young still.

He has been very lightly backed but when I rode him today he listened very well and seems very docile and even held his cool when another horse in the yard broke free. Next question is do you think £850 sounds the right price?

I would say that cross should lead to a far bigger horse than 14.2
Two test you can do is to measure with a piece of string from his elbow to the back of his fetlock and the reverse the string from elbow to withers and the difference is how much he has to grow or measure from the centre of the knee to the top of the coronary band and the measurement in inches is what he will make in hands i.e. 15 inches = 15 hands

If 3 he's in theory almost fully grown, if 2 1/2 he could have loads to go. They can grow significantly after 3 but its usually an inch or two over a longer period, but you would have no guarantee of this.
The string tests mentioned above are as good a educated guess as you'll get.

I would personally be asking myself is he big enough for my needs now, if so if he grows its just a bonus, but if the answer is no then I'd think long and hard as you may find yourself restricted in what u can do with them in the future x

oh I like him! He looks young to me to, but the ad does say 'rising' 3, so maybe he is 2 and a bit and they wanted to add a few months to make him more saleable? Price wise Id want to pay a little less than that but still, looks as though once he has filled out etc he will be a very nice sort!

oooh how exciting! let us know how you get on. He looks like a little diamond in the rough!!! you going to show him? he,ll make a nice little show cob( can you tell i like him.lol)

No not yet, this young man is going to stay at his present yard for a month then will assess the situation as can move him into my present yard or hopefully into my new field :D.
