Hello,

Today I was in my local very nice butchers getting the dog a bone and whilst there thought I would ask what they do with all the bits people don't eat. Turns out they are going to be making pet mix. He showed me a tr any of livers, kidneys, lungs pork bits and a few other bits and said he will add veg mince it all up and sell for £3 per kilo. It seemed a good deal to me but what else would I have to feed him to make it a balanced diet? He is a small schnauzer poodle cross not sure of current weight but can easily check.

Thankyou

Didn't see your other question!

There's a raw food sticky at the top of this board. The suggested ratio is 80:10:10 meat, bones (none weight bearing), offal. This can be over a week as opposed to all in one day.

I order in bulk for my three and have a dedicated freezer. Frozen chicken bits are cheap in any supermarket. I feed tripe, bones such as chicken wings/thighs/carcasses, pig trotters, lamb breast. I buy sprats or other cheap fish, liver, kidneys and heart. Morrisons is fab for all of this. They also get whole raw eggs, salmon oil, bio yoghurt, the occasional raw carrot, tinned sardines in tomato sauce.

I know some people use chicken as their basic and add whatever on top.

That bloke's website will give you ideas. I feed green tripe from him, another staple. (not the useless white stuff from supermarkets)

You're supposed to introduce one new protein at a time to check for allergies. It's a good idea. Go slow on liver, it can cause tremendous runny poo!

That does sound a bit steep, premium Natures Menu type stuff is around £3-3.40/kg and I too pay around £2/kg for various mince mixes. I'd also want some assurance of the content, using trim and leftovers it would be easy to have too much offal or fat going in.

I pay 50p per kilo for pet mince from my butcher - just minced offcuts and offal. Contents can vary quite a bit but the dogs are all looking fab on it, much better than they did on a "proper" mince from a raw supplier! Even The Ancient One has deigned to eat it and he is the fussiest creature on the planet!! So I would say your butcher is overcharging considerably!

I've just started getting some from my butcher- 50p kilo, no chicken (dog has an allergy) and no veg. so agree OP that yours is on the steep side. However, if its good stuff, you are happy with it and only have the one then you might not mind. Guidelines seem to be 3% of bodyweight daily, 2% for weight loss and 5% for growing dogs-just guidelines mind.

I use Landywoods. Its much cheaper than what your butcher is going to be charging and you can get a lot more variety

Same here, much cheaper my local Butcher gives me carrier bag full at least of bones every week for free which really helps too.
OP your butcher is charging too much for what is usually thrown away.

I use Rawtogo!
Mrs Spaniel was struggling to put the weight on with NI so we made the switch, She is still eating roughly the same amount but has gone from struggling to keep 10kg on to being a solid 12.5kg according to her last weigh in!
