Hi there - first ever post so here goes! I have a 5 year old mare who I've had for 5 months. Am having weekly lessons with her but would like someone who is good with young horses to help me school her. Any recommendations? Horse is kept in Harpenden, Herts - thanks!:)

Hello, not in that area...just wanted to say welcome! If you do not get many replies then you might have more luck if you put the area in the title.

Hi, unfortunately not in your area so don't know anyone but might be useful if you add more detail about whether you want someone freelance to come to you, what stage your horse is at and what you want from the schooling - basics, jumping, dressage?
I've always found word of mouth effective and normally my instructor has recommended someone. My youngster is a tricky personality so I'd only let him go away to someone who is a very quiet but effective rider who wasn't going to push him too hard just because he has scope.
Good luck!!!

Hi there, I get my instructor to ride my horse for me, this has really accelerated his school work, so if you could have maybe one lesson every five days, and maybe you warm him up for thirty mins then she gets on and really works on him for thirty minutes, you will see exactly what she has been asking you to do, and how well he can do it.
In my experience if you want to find a really good rider to ride him, you will find they have their own horse and won't have time, or they will want to be paid, so you might as well pay your instructor, this will also give consistency, as I find too many girls go for instant results, which is no good for horses, they need to work up slowly and build the correct muscles.
You can learn to long rein him with contact which will give you both one day of doing something different. Maybe some gridwork, trotting poles, and small cross poles to keep him forward going and interested, one day hacking in company. This cross training will keep him fit and forward going.

Hi everyone - thanks very much for your advice. Didn't expect to get feedback so fast! Great to know that there are lovely people out there to help.

Try Marcia Wakeman (you can google her). She comes to Bibbs Lane and The Holt weekly so may be able to help. She is great with youngsters and has a young WB of her own who she broke in and is now competing BD.
As well as riding, she is amazing at in hand work too

im not that far from you and have schooled/backed/broken youngsters.
Ideally i was looking for one to buy but id be willing to have a chat and see if there's anything i can help you with? :)
