Hi I'm posting for a freind, had a call this am asking to check on Shetland as lying down a lot not wanting to stand. Novice owner. Pony in question is late 20 ish, has dropped some weight and apparently been down since last nigh! I have got him up and put him in with a nice big bed, am steaming some hay for him, and his tpr are all normal. No lami stance although walking on heels slightly, he is wobbly behind? Vet called and will be seen today ASAP and will keep a very close eye on him until they arrive. Just wondered if anyone has had this or anything like this?

Possibly laminitis caused by cushings disease if he is 20+. They don't always stand like a typical photo of a lami case, but being reluctant to walk and laying down a lot is quite typical.

Don't think you can do any more until the vet comes and gives his advice, but I would soak some hay in the meantime as you will need to feed him low sugar feed and you might as well be getting some hay ready!

I have had lots of experience with cushingoid ponies as have many on here so keep us posted.

Thanks guys, hay is steaming as we speak, will ask to do bloods for cushings, just never seen a wobbly pony! It is as I'd he's back legs can hold him properly rather than he is foot sore I u know what I mean?! Will keep u posted though x

Update and he is ok, no lami but have taken bloods. We think as he is very old he is just feeling the cold and being down all night didn't help! He is now being stabled and turned out for the day and is on some pain killers for arthritis, so happy as he really is a lovely old boy, and I'm happy as I have a new pony to play with x thank you for your replies x

Ditto Llewellyn. My elderly Welsh D dropped weight and went wobbly behind. It was Cushings. Came on very sudden. Bloods will confirm or eliminate. Hopefully not.

We didn't get long enough with our boy to get the results back (
