I've just moved to a new area - never had a problem with ticks before, but in the last week have had to remove 4 from my collie x springer. I'm really worried I could miss some as she's long haired. Can anyone suggest any reliable repellents? Best way to keep them off her?

Advantix, seresto collar or Frontline combo. All repel ticks, all are prescription only. The seresto collar is probably the best value for money as it lasts for 7-8months.

I work in a vets and we have seen a huge amount of ticks!

Great, thanks will get down the vets. Is there a season for ticks or am I likely to have this problem all year?

We used tick collars on the rescue dogs in Cyprus as the ticks there were a huge problem. I bought some off amazon to donate to the kennels which are specifically for ticks and last for months. The ticks start dropping off shortly after you put the collars on. Get a tick specific one though rather than a tick+ flea one. Seresto or Scalibor are both reliable.

Yes..there's a season. Summer is worst time I think but once winter comes you shouldn't see any.

With the Seresto collar - seems to be quite a few reviews on Amazon reporting seizures following use of the collar.

Obviously I know everything can cause a reaction, but find this quite alarming. TrasaM - did any of your rescue dogs have bad reactions?
I know - I've read up on it too. The soresto ones were very expensive in Cyprus but they were more effective. I don't know of any of the digs having had a reaction to them though. However there the ticks came with really nasty diseases so it was finding a balance between effective tick control and preserving the dogs health. The ones I bought were the Scalibor ones which aren't as strong but still did the job but didn't last as long. What I did notice was when I first bought Sam home from the kennels he was at I took the tick collar off immediately. we were still in Cyprus then for two weeks and the ticks still did not bother him although we walked in the same areas as before. Before he had the collar on he'd pick up loads of the damn things even on a short walk. Kennels got the Seresto collar for him and apparently the ticks just fell off him! It was removed at my request for use on another dog before he was shipped to the uk. You'd have to question just how strong the chemical is to be that effective!
