Hi, I’ve got a couple options for yards. Sorry a little long but I’m trying to make it make sense aha. List of pros and cons for each one, send you thoughts please!
Context: for a youngster, we enjoy in hand hacking for both our bond and experience
Yard 1: £25 per week (not including hay and straw)
Pros:
Outdoor Arena
Small quiet yard
Okay hacking, but not great - around the village and a few fields that you can go around (5/10min walk from yard) but to go anywhere proper is crossing along busier roads etc.
10/15mins from home.
Straw and bedding comes from yard so accessible anytime (no delivery fee etc)
Cons:
Hacking is basic, again around the village and a couple small fields.
No winter turnout (turnout whilst you muck out)
A great yard overall, nice and quiet, owners lovely and all try and help each other out. however the winter turnout is something I’m really not a fan (main reason I’d move) as it’s not right for the horses, a struggle working around work shifts also. But trying to find a yard with winter turnout is nearly impossible, but I may have found one
Option 2
£30 per week, (not including hay and straw)
Pros: all year turnout, (big pro for me) stables available but you can pick and choose when you want your horses in/out etc.
small quiet yard
Okay hacking, looks similar to option 1 to be honest but I will have a more in depth look at it.
Equestrian centre in the same village of this yard, provides arena hires and small competitions etc
Cons:
Little more per month obviously but not a huge difference so no problem there.
No arena, not huge as I have a youngster so we don’t really need one at the moment. Equestrian centre has arena hires available if wanted in future but obviously be a hire fee to add.
Hay and straw to be ordered and delivered in, however told that other liveries (around 3-4 other liveries at this yard) try and order at the same time so helps with delivery.
15/20 mins from home, time isn’t a big problem here as sometimes it takes a good 15mins to get to yard 1 because of traffic.
Yard 2 is double the mileage from yard 1 so increase in fuel etc.
1st yard is good, as I say, hacking isn’t the best but it suits us pretty well with only in hand hacking we do whilst being a youngster. Unfortunately it’s just the winter turnout is a big issue for me, I just don’t think it’s fair definitely whilst a youngster (I just feel guilty, especially when the weather is nice
)
2nd yard sounds great with the all year turnout, hay and straw to order in shouldn’t be an issue as other few liveries try and get it at the same time.
It’s just further away than current yard.
And hacking I would have to have a in depth look at, even though we don’t go out for rides as he’s young… we do spend a lot of time doing in hand hacks.
Cost wise they’d be out during summer for both yards so not much difference there, but for winter yard 1 is more expensive because of the hay and bedding costs for all winter with them being in most of the time at this yard.
For yard 2 hay would most likely be obviously needed for winter but straw would be a lot less with them being out during winter too (maybe the odd few nights coming in for real bad weather). How ever it is obviously double the mileage compared to yard 1.
Sorry long I know but I’m sure many of you will have experience of this
