i appreciate any advice i can get.....thank you in advance....i have a beautiful 17h belgium warmblood mare. she sleeps standing up and has become unbalanced and fallen on her front right knee and 17 days ago due to the fall has a wound slightly below her knee about the size of a 50p piece. it initially swelled up quite large with no heat and no lameness it also started leaking the yellow gunky fluid the swelling has now gone down considerably and is a hard swelling not soft still no heat and no lameness but the gunky fluid is still leaking. the issue i have is that i live in northern cyprus and the vet is an animal vet and not an equine vet. this is why i need as much advice as possible. she had equine antibiotics and the wound itself is being cleaned daily with saline solution and then i always cover it up with a large breathable plaster when she goes into the pen to stretch her legs and roll if needed to stop dirt from entering it and also to keep flies off it. I then let it breath while in the stable. we have been using biokadin which is similiar to a purple iodine lotion. the flesh is a light pink but it is still leaking the yellow fluid which i think is fibrin fluid. please let me know if there is anything else i can do to assist the healing as i miss riding her and want her back to her well self :)

Hi zigzag
Thank you for your post.

I called a vet today who cleaned it out and advised that we put her on another course of antibiotics and keep the wound clean as it was leaking today so fingers crossed xray at present not needed.

My Girl is 17hands and she never lies down she always sleeps standing up and sometimes she just falls forward when she is asleep. Normally she has stable bandages on to protect her leg but I was away and on this occasion the grooms unfortunately forgot.

Thank you again and fingers crossed we are on the road to recovery.

I would also be looking into why she does not lie down its not normal how old is she? We had an old gelding that stopped lying down at work and he would also fall over and hit his face and all sorts, vet said it's due to him being over tired from not lying down, he suggested a course of bute to see if he was finding it uncomfortable getting up and down, after a few weeks he did start to lie down so it did help him, I hope you manage to get on top if her injury.

I used granulated sugar on a leaky wound and covered with a bandage. I changed this twice a day and it did the trick. It might be worth a try. The sugar draws water away from the wound and thus starves some of the bacteria of the medium they require to grow.

Note: I did clear this with my vet first.

I second using Manuka honey. I'm using it on an over reach injury which hadn't healed and was still gunky after being treated with wound powder for 10 days. The Vet recommended it and it has worked really well. I used a lint pad with honey on, wrapped gamgee around and then bandaged. Dressing removed every 2 days, wound washed and then honey, gamgee bandage again until it has healed over.
