I honestly dont know what to do:(

My old clippers broke, id had an electrician friend look at them and he managed to get them going, but not for long. Anyway i spoke to a clipper repair company and explained what they was doing and do they think they are worth repairing (ive had them since new and they are 13 years old!)

The company said to send them in, it was £25 for a service, plus any parts, plus labor, however if they opened them up and they wasnt worth repairing, there was no charge.

Brillent i thought and arranged for them to get dropped of at the place. I put a note in the box saying to let me know of the costs as they are old and might not be worth repairing, i also said not to sharpen the blades (ive got 2 sets) if the clippers are not worth repairing (whats the point?) and my contact details.

Anyway a week later id still not heard anything, so i rang them yesterday and was told they hadnt been looked at, but they were likely get done tomorrow. When i left work i had a message saying they been done and was ready to collect (brillent) until i rang them and they want £138!! they said that the motor needed replacing. I was very shocked at the cost as its not much more to get a new set and these are 13 years old! I dont have £138 and they seem very reluctant to let me pay on a card. I explained again that they are old and thats alot of money to spend on them, and asked if there was any guarantees on the work, to which i didnt really get an answer (at least if i put the money towards new ones, id get a guarantee they'd work X amount of years)

So now i dont know what to do, ive got 3 options i think?

1. pay the money (somehow, not sure how!) and hope that nothing else goes wrong with them
2. I can apparently collect the clippers and the company will remove the new part, however my old part has been thrown and im guessing id still have to pay for the sharpening of the blades (even tho i didnt ask for it)
3. let the company have them to try and sell themselves to cover the cost.

I recently saw a set of these clippers sell for £85 working on preloved.

What would you do? I think im in shock! if they'd have rang with the cost first, id have said dont bother, but feel stuck now they have been fixed.

I'd see what you can buy on ebay etc for the £138, if you can buy something better than yours fully refurbished then I'd just leave them there and do that.
People are offering clipping for £20 around here so £140 would be 7 clips!!

That's a difficult one. They're really cheeky doing all that work without you asking. I think that you should speak to CAB about it. I don't think the work should have been done without your permission.

I would tend to lean towards 13 year old clippers than new ones, I think they're better. However I would try one more time with the shop, saying you would need a warranty for the work done (OH thinks electrical work only has to have 3 months warranty). Tell the shop you are considering taking legal advice over the matter, see if that jolts them a bit.

Thanks, i just cant decide. Ive had a quick look on ebay and i can get a new set of my clippers (Liveryman Arena) for around £200(ish)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Liveryman...t=UK_Horse_Wear_Equipment&hash=item2a32c3c36e

But i only really clip one horse now, so probably not even worth bothering, full clips seem to be around £30-40 around me.

If i do option -

Option 1 im spending more than what they are worth
Option 2 Ill have clippers that dont work and im guessing ill end up paying for blades with no clipper
Option 3 I get nothing and the shop makes themselves some money out of me (charming!)

Just spoken to my DH
He says:
Your verbal agreement was for contact prior to any repair over the service cost.
They have broken the contract.
In any other walk of life if work is carried out that is not authorised by the customer, the business either removes the part or compromises (heavily) on the cost.
Collect the clippers, pay for the service ONLY - telling them to remove the unauthorised motor.
If they refuse, contact trading standards.........

Have you got anything written prior to them having the clippers?

No, unfortunately it was just a phone call. ive no doubt the company saw my note about contacting me that i put in the box, otherwise they wouldn't have known my contact number.

They did say that they would remove the part, but i couldnt get my old part back because it had been thrown, however it didnt work so i guessing that doesnt make any difference if its returned or not. The chap didnt said either way, but im guessing id need to pay for the blade sharpening because they have been done, for a pair of clippers i cant use.

I'd get them to take out the part and pay for the blade sharpening - after all if you are going to replace them with the same model then the blades will go on the new set?
