When I try to walk my youngster out to get used to things intake treats to praise him today we went out and a horse trailer came past while she was grazing and I thought talk calmly to her and give a treat but I dropped it I'm not sure if she was annoyed at been took away from grass or not getting the treat or both but she reared then double bronked which was very dangerous how do I deal with the situation if it happens again adive ty

Never walk anything on the road without a bit in it’s mouth. Walking on the roads is not the place to stop and snack, it’s to get educated. Always put yourself between the horse and the car, so essentially if you’re walking on the left hand side of the road, you walk on the right of the horse.

I think that if you’re not going to be comfortable dealing with that sort of thing, then you shouldn’t put the horse and yourself in the sort of situation that could trigger that. Don’t set yourself, and the horse, up to fail.

I would focus on working with her in environments where it isn’t dangerous for her to buck and rear, and where you can ensure that you handle any of that sort of thing (which is totally normal for a youngster) in a positive and confident manner.

It will be better for her to be unused to traffic than to have a bad experience with it. If you can get an experienced instructor or expert to teach her about these things, then you can ensure she doesn’t put anyone at risk when she’s reacting to new things.

I also wouldn’t be feeding treats unless you’re in an absolutely safe and secure environment. I’d not want my hands off the reins or rope unless everything was calm and secure.
