Have also posted in veterinary but thought I would post here too..
My mare has developed mud fever and lives out 24/7 with a river running through the field which they all cross about 5 times a day, which is great for them living naturally and everything but when I need to keep her legs dry and shes going over the river up to her knees its not so good! Any advice on treating her in these conditions..im beginning to think theres no hope!

Indian herbs do a gunky paste which sticks on the legs well and treats mud fever and cuts.
Can't recall the product but they do advertise it for mud fever.
If you can't find it, clean the legs thoroughly then coat thickly in drapolene (baby bum cream), it's supposed to protect their bottoms from what comes out so should form a waterproof barrier for your river water.

i would get a anti bacteral protection plus or there is powder for it and also a multi purpose dressing such as poultex with powerflex bandage make sure you clean feet and banadage regular just to keep infections away always replace the cream or powder for a defence also try hidiscrud
