Hello,
I have a 7 year old thouroughbred. He often chews the wood off of the post and rail fencing. As i got him in from the field yesterday he did his first crib where he bit the wood and sucked in air at the same time. Anyone have any suggestion? Anything greatly appreciated and tried!
Thanks

You can try crib box, it's this sticky stuff that comes in a tub, you just plaster it across the top of the door or on fence posts. You can also put creosote (sp) on the wood (if you can get hold of it these days) but you have to put that on quite often.

If he starts sucking in air, thats classed as wind sucking, you can get a coller that goes around his throut area that stops him from sucking in air.

Agree with the posts above. I would also look into the possibility that he has a stomach ulcer as these are common in TBs and can cause windsucking.

look in to stomach ulscers put crib bite on the wood but an anti sucking collar on and get some acid eaze from global herbs coz if he is sucking air his belly will become acidy!

Please do NOT use a collar on him. He obviously has a problem which is getting worse and so causing him to cribbite/windsuck. The first place to start when trying to find the cause is probably stomach ulcers. Either talk to your vet or try a supplement to ease stomach ulcers. Just treating the symptoms IMO is cruel and counter-productive

Although I agree with all the ulcer replies I found that cresote on fence stopped my tb immediately. He bit his post and rail when we moved to new yard so was probably stress related but it stopped him in his tracks.

Stress plays a big part. Our new pony has cribbed for years. He was in with 2 much bigger geldings and a mare. We moved him into a field with my mares (one of whom is smaller than he is at the mo) and i haven't seen him crib since, where as before he would spend hours latching onto fence posts in order to crib.

why not use a collar that will stop more air going in to is stomach as long as he is seen by a vet for the ulscers a collar will not do him any harm!
