my 14.2hh arab is really fast and loves racing other horses/ponies. When we got him we were told he had been hunted before, but they hadn't hunted him for ages. If another horse races past him, i loose control and just gallops as fast as he can. Would it be safe to hunt him? Or would he embarrass me?

i think you need to learn to control him properly first. Make sure you can control him whilst cantering out hacking, do you have a friend who could perhaps canter CALMLY past you so he can get used to other horses passing him?

you really need to be in control out hunting as for one you are not allowed to over take the master under any circumstances. You also need to be aware that people wont want you charging around out of control, its for your own sake as well as it being good hunting etiquette.

Well maybe not safe, safe to hunt but with my pointer who tries to race everything including the hounds I bridge my reins on him and that usually helps a little bit. Find a friend with a horse with a nice big bottom and tuck in behind him/her, I find with very strong horses that I hunt they always usually stop when the other horses stop anyway.
