ok, so i have someone viewing my horse tonight, but i need major help.
she wont load in a trailer, i did start practicing with her with a friends trailer where she did improve and almost went in but that friend moved off and havnt tried since, and i know she wont just walk in if she was sold and they came to pick her up. Aswell, i have always gone to shows in a 7.5ton wagon with the Y/O's which she loaded great into no problems. I then got a 3.5ton wagon and she for some reason jsut wont load into that, we have tried everything and before anyone says is she scared i can assure she isnt and when trying to load her she has never broke a sweat etc. now what do i do about this situation? im not meaning shall i lie becuase i dont agree with that but how do i handle this situation? Any advice would help!!!! Thankyou :)

I would say she loads fine in a big lorry, but you don't have a trailer. No more, no less. You would not be telling lies. Who knows they may have 7 1/2 T lorry so no problem. Worry about the rest once you know they want her and their method of transport. Then give yourself a weekend to get her loading....mares are tricky, mine was awful stubborn, but she now self loads at the canter! BUT it took a weekend of very firm handling and no giving in. Her not loading was not an option....and once she realised this she was fine and still is.

Have you told the people who are coming that she is difficult to load in a trailer? If you haven't, perhaps you should as if they are coming a long way to see her, they might not be very amused! You could perhaps tell them that she hasn't been in a trailer for a while, so might be difficult??!!

You might find that she is OK now, but you won't know until you've tried her!
Sorry, not a lot of help, just a few thoughts.

I thought my mare wouldn't load when she was sold because she was a cow bag to move from old livery yard to the new one and I didn't dare travel her anywhere else after that!
But new owner turned up with a battered old trailer and even more battered landrover and after a couple of goes, she just walked in!
I hadn't said anything to the new owner about her loading, so she wasn't anticipating any argy-bargy, and that's probably why she didn't get any.

But yes, I would say the horse loads fine in a big lorry, and let them get on with it.

I think this discussion is a good example of "buyer beware". The onus is on the buyer to ask the questions.......if they don't ask then you don't say. I am not saying one should lie, but if they asked does she load, I would say yes in a big lorry, I do not have a trailer. As Flicker says she may well load for someone else.

Thanks everyone!
I just always get myself in a right chew when people come to view her. I feel sick to my stomach :S i did say to the girl on the phone do you want me to ask any questions but she said she wud just come to see her and see her for herself rather than be put off with silly litte things. shes not coming from to far either onyl like 30mins. Wish me luck guys!!!!

I would tell the potential buyer on the phone that she loads well in a lorry but is a bad loader in a trailer. In my mind the girl was a bit silly not to ask and perhaps legally you are not obliged to offer information, but morally I think you are better off telling the whole truth. Aside from anything else, if they turn up with a trailer and can't get her in the sale will just fall through at that point.

So basically you're saying she won't load in a trailer...but she won't load in a small lorry either? it has to be a 7.5ton or she won't go in?

If I was coming to see your horse and you hadn't bothered to tell me that on the phone I would be very pissed off with you, at least have the decency to tell them and then they can make up their own minds whether to view the horse or not. With experienced people it probably won't take long to get her loading, we use pressure/release...never pick up a stick and don't get any problems.

As someone else said 'buyer beware'.

Just tell them exactly what you have told us.

That way you have been honest and if they buy her, they will be buying her worts an all (so to speak) I'd be much happier knowing that the person buying a horse of me knows the bad points as much as the good, it's a piece of mind for you knowing that they'd still really want her, despite her trailer loading issue. :)

I've just sold my boy who would not travel in a trailer (he'd load ok but would freak the moment we moved off!!) Anyway I stated this in the advert and reiterated it to potential buyers, it only put one person off but wasn't a problem as it didn't bother 99% of the others!! Just be up front with people and let them decide for themselves!!

It doesnt matter this time round, they were complete timewasters! Didnt even turn up or bother to ring to say they wernt coming. Poor horse stuck in the stable for 2hours after upteen phonecalls to them which they never answered. Theres some nice people out there isnt their "/
