HELP!

As some of you may know, I moved Mac to a new yard at the beginning of the year. On the day he moved, he got really stressed and was rearing and thrashing around in the stable. After a couple of days, he calmed right down and was back to his normal laid back self.

This morning, I got a call to say that he had gotten all wound up and had started rearing etc, and tried jumping out of the stable. He got over the door with his front end, but his rear end was still in the stable. Got there as quick as I could, and by the time I got there, fire brigade and vet were there. He was sedated and freed and we have since moved him to a stable where he is nearer to his field mate. He was still quite uptight when I left tonight, but am hoping he will settle overnight.

I have no real idea what has upset him. The only things possible are that the stable he was in is, is inside and there was only him and another horse. Maybe he didn't like not seeing all the comings and goings, although there are people and horses passing through all day? The other thing that could have upset him is a rat. We know there are rats about and it is possible that one got in his box and freaked him out! The stable he has moved to is outside and he can see his friend plus two other horses. Really don't know what we can do if he doesn't settle there.

He hasn't hurt himself at all and vet checked him all over. He is quite probably bruised and will be on bute for a couple of days.

Sounds like a lucky escape, hope he settles better in his new stable, my mare attempt to jump out her stable when we first got her, but luckily the door hinges gave way, so no rescue required. It might be worth fitting either an anti weave grill or a slip rail half way across opening above the door, both will still allow him to look out, but hopefully stop him trying to jump out again.

Poor you, thank god he is ok. We had one at Uni that would not settle in the indoor stables as she wanted to see what was happening outside - can you move to outside stables so he can see who goes in and out? Maybe even instal antiweaving bars so he can not get out? - (not an expert but worked for one at our stables at home). Hope he's o.k.
