My Scoty Terrier went for one of my cats thismorning, I managed to break it up and he got a big telling off and I think he knew he did wrong, but will he ever settle with the cats and stop trying to chase them?
He is 3 and a half. Im not sure if he is just being playful with them, but it was pretty scarey to see thismorning!
He's not been bought up with cats and I was told by the previous owner that he likes to chase cats, but I was hoping I could re-train him!
You may find that tricky. You'll know the difference between playing and meaning it.
My 3 JRTs have never lived with cats and would probably cause damage if the found one on a walk or in the garden, however a lot of that is because the cats run so they chase. There was a cat on the yard I used to be on and I introduced them one at a time and because the cat used to just hiss or stay lying down they never bothered with him. However, a friends JRT chased the cat and they then followed - gave them a good telling off and they never bothered again but wont trust them 100% with cats.
You've gone about it the right way by having cats and then introducing a dog but I'm not sure its going to be easy with a dog, esp a terrier, of that age to get them living together.
Have you got a crate? I would suggest getting one and introducing them to eachother with the dog in the crate - you can be sure then that neither get hurt. Also means you can keep the cat safe if you're not arround.
Other than that I'm affraid I don't know what to suggest as I've never really lived with cats.
Thank you very much, some really good advise there.
Ill defo get a crate, coz I really dont want to send poochy back, Im getting really fond of him now and he's coming on leaps and bounds round the horses now.
