C is possibly in her twenties and last summer whilst on loan developed a reaction to something (the sun we think) and ended up with very scabby legs.

Most of the scabs have now healed however there are a couple that are continuing to be a problem and will just not heal.

The vet has given me a steriod cream however, this has had little effect on the scabs and now they have fallen off taking a lot of hair with them. If it wasnt for the fact I know the scabs were there it would of been mistaken for mudfever.

The vet has now recommended I just bathe the area in salt water and towel dry fully and then put this other cream on (forgot the name but ends in Zine and in a white pot) and if it doesnt heal up in a week then we will try something else.

Anyway my question is is there anything such as a supplement I can give her that will help to boost her immune system or is it just a case of her body taking ages to heal due to her age?.

Just to add she was given a clip in October and the clip is still fully visable.

Did the scabs come up anywhere else in the summer or just on her legs? It could stil be mud fever, they can still get it in the summer its just more likely in winter due to the wet softening the skin.
Marigold is a good herb for skin conditions. Echinacea is a good herb for boosting the immune system.
Linseed is also good for the skin.

Liver damage can cause photo sensitivity. I would recommend milk thistle and Echinacea for liver and immune system.

Might be worth giving hilton herbs a ring, they were very helpful for my horse.

They just appeared on the back legs after we had had some rather hot weather from what ive been told. The vet was unsure as to what it was so prescribed her some antibiotics and steriod cream.

I might have a look into Echinacea. Ive looked at Pink Powder and Redcell but they seem v expensive.

Liver damage was my first thought so I put her on milk thistle. However the blood tests came back clear.

Has she got white socks Nmm? Friend of mine had a veteran Arab gelding with white socks and he suffered terribly with mud fever in the winter and a similar condition in the summer which is a mix of sunburn on weakened skin that then allows the same bacteria to enter. He kept on top of it during the winter by washing and drying the legs every time ned came in and smothering them in udder cream as a barrier, when bone dry. In the summer, he smothered them in sun cream and watched carefully for any breaks in the skin.

i was thinking liver but you say her bloods were fine. put her on marigold and dulcamara this is a healing skin herb very good clean the scabs with hibi scrub then apply either tea tree cream or aloe vera cream at least twice a day!

She's got white legs on both hinds BOF.

Not suprisingly she gets a really itchy scaby face too in the summer as she's got a white blaze, although suncream usually helps with that. I have tried grazing masks but she always removes them.

Her conditon does sound exactly the same as your friends arab though.

The mudfever has been almost clear this year but the scabs have just fallen off leaving lots of pink skin.

Im hoping suncream and turnout socks in the summer will help. I just hope I can help the condition to clear up.

Will deffo look into all your suggestions guys. Thanks for all the advice its certainly given me lots of options.

Phew, whatever it is hopefully she will has turned the corner.

Unfortunately, skin problems can be complicated and sometimes the cause is never found.

I hope it settles soon x
