HELPP!! Need advice on hock swelling and opinions?

Hi Guys,

Basically my new mare who I shall have on full loan who was due to arrive at the weekend was kicked on Thurs evening, she obviously did not come at the weekend when she was supposed to so is now supposed to be coming this Sunday.

She has 3 cuts on her leg, the worst is on her fetlock at the front and it is perfectly clean and tidy the swelling on this area has gone, she has a small graze on her tendon and a small surface graze on the inside of the hock. She has been having bute and is appearing not lame and has been going out in the field, the only worry is that the hock is still swollen.

What do you guys think? Do you think the owner needs to call vet? Or do you think it may just be bruising and will go down with time and should be worked through it? Also what would you guys do in my situation with taking the horse on on Sunday? We have a good contract laid out ect, but not sure whether to insist on vet to cover myself for the future with this particular injury.. I have my stable for a whole month paid so I am in no rush to move her but the owner does not have the stable paid for another few weeks and I want to be as accommodating as poss.

I think i would want a vet to cast an eye over the injuries before the horse arrived.
It probably is nothing but bruising however especially with joints I would want a vets opinion.
also if the horse is travelling any distance to get to you then I would want the vets opinion on whether they advise travelling the horse or waiting a week or two for the swelling to go down.
I am very cautious with joints.
 
Thanks guys thats good advice, also do you feel that it is appropriate to put in the contract somewhere that if any injuries occur on that leg and it is related to this kick that they are liable for vet bills whether its short term or long term and also that if the horse goes permanently lame on this leg that they take the horse back with a 30 day notice period? I am not being rude by saying that am I?

if a loan horse goes permanently lame they would generally go back anyway, if the vet gives the all clear AND you are happy with it then I would not put any extra clauses in
 
thank you! got a vet popping in during the week to have a look so fingers crossed its nothing :) I just didn't want to sound unreasonable if you know what I mean.
 
My horse has just had his fourth vet visit and a Penrose drain put into his knee for a seemingly "nothing to see" field injury. He is going to need at least two more visits, IF everything goes well. The bills are not going to be cheap, but he is insured.

I'm assuming that the mare is currently insured by her owner, but not by you? I would get the vet out to check so that if you need to claim, the accident is covered, whereas if you wait and start a new insurance policy, it will count as a pre-existing injury.

oh really! good luck and I hope your horse is better soon!
She is covered by her insurance right now, we have sorted it our end but obviously no claims can be made on that within 2 weeks of opening the policy so her owner will be keeping hers for a good few more weeks yet and will be cancelled a week of so after she has moved to mine to make sure she has cover every second which is good because if anything was to crop up when the vet visits in the week she will be covered on her policy.
 
I would not take possession of the horse until her injuries are totally healed. If she did not see a vet, how did she have bute administered?

Anyway, whilst the horse is currently injured I would delay receiving her for a few weeks.
