Hellooo, my horse has had a dry cough and a runny nose for a week now. Originaly thoughc ough was due to hay, as a few at my yard had it when they we're keep it becasue of snow 2 weeks ago, but mine was out all day as usual so didnt really eat anymroe than normal, and never had problems with her and dust before (she used to eat really bad straw and be absolutley fine), and since none of them have runny noses just thought it might be a horsey cold.

Her nose was really snotty for the first few days, but is now only a slightly snotty (i know its lovely!) buts shes still got an awful dry cough, walked ehr to field today adn she ahd a coughing fit and a girl at my yard just looked at her like she was gonna drop dead!

She does seem normal in herself still happily eating, calling for me, getting all excited about going out in the morning, and she has been abit depressed the last month as i got a new little pony who she doesnt like very much and doesnt enjoy not being an only horse, so havent been overly concerned about ehr cold, but now since its been a week im abit worried!

Any ideas on what it might be or how I could help? sorry for the essay, but i love my horse! Thanksss

wet my hay for a few days before it snowed again (dont want frozen hay) but im not convince it is the hay as she would have a runny nose?

There's always viruses floating around at this time of year. A few members have posted on here about coughs and colds so if you're sure it isn't COPD/RAO then it's probably just a virus. If so, there's nothing you can do except support your horse while his body deals with it. Proper nutrition, all essential vits and mins, kept warm but not suffocated, plenty of fresh air. Should be back to normal in a week or so, though some viruses can hang around for longer than you expect. If a horse is particularly badly affected or very old/very young/compromised immune system, watch out for opportunistic 2ndary bacterial infections - these would respond to antibx. Hope he's ok x
