Hellooo, my horse has had a dry cough and a runny nose for a week now. Originaly thoughc ough was due to hay, as a few at my yard had it when they we're keep it becasue of snow 2 weeks ago, but mine was out all day as usual so didnt really eat anymroe than normal, and never had problems with her and dust before (she used to eat really bad straw and be absolutley fine), and since none of them have runny noses just thought it might be a horsey cold.

Her nose was really snotty for the first few days, but is now only a slightly snotty (i know its lovely!) buts shes still got an awful dry cough, walked ehr to field today adn she ahd a coughing fit and a girl at my yard just looked at her like she was gonna drop dead!

She does seem normal in herself still happily eating, calling for me, getting all excited about going out in the morning, and she has been abit depressed the last month as i got a new little pony who she doesnt like very much and doesnt enjoy not being an only horse, so havent been overly concerned about ehr cold, but now since its been a week im abit worried!

Any ideas on what it might be or how I could help? sorry for the essay, but i love my horse! Thanksss

It might not seem like it is something you need a vet for. However as others have said it is. The problem with horses is they rarely get a cough that doesn't clear up very quickly unless there is a problem. Also there are so many minor respiratory problems (coughs) that can turn very serious and affect the horse forever and it is certainly not worth the risk

I'm no vet but sounds like a possible: virus or respiratary infection or copd/rao- i'd get the vets, so you can get it sorted out.

vet came an checked her over. Shes just recovering from a bad cold and is over the worst part now, but shes given me antibiotics to give her in her tea to help speed her recovery. Shes gonna check back in 5 days to see if she has a respiritory problem as she might be abit mroe sensitive to dust now, and see if she needs some other drugs for a week but not strated them yet as its a waste of money as they probs wont be needed! but other than that shes not too worried, and her nose is alot less snotty today already :) knew I should have trusted my insticts in the first place and could have cleared it up sooner! Thanks for all your help reassuring me I wasnt overreacting about needing the vet :)

Just saw your reply- glad you got it sorted- hope she's feeling better now?!

How about adding garlic & manuka honey to feed as well to help clear/soothe her? Wont do any harm or interact with her medication.

After alot of money spent on vets bills and medication, she was better on cushionbed with a few little coughs a day and eventually none, so thinking it was just a virus and she was over it now, I put her back on straw and lots of coughs the next day. So seeing as weather is better and shes very hardy I chucked the horses out now for the summer, and no coughs whatsoever! So turns out shes just not good with the dust in the straw... well done vets, not!
