Hi everyone, my mare has a hematoma on her chest, it's not very big but it is slowly getting bigger. Anyone know what's the best thing I can do for it? She's had it for a few days now and I've left it alone as I'm not sure how to treat it. Will it go away on its own or does a vet need to come and drain it?

Also, she's turned out and still running around happy and is her diva like self

A vet needs to see it and give appropriate treatment, probably anti inflammatories , possibly something to rub on to help with dispersal and if required he may consider draining it, it may go on it's own but can become an issue if left, only a vet can know what will be best.

It's almost certainly a kick - they're common in horses who live in groups. I put them on bute for a few days and use Anusol (a treatment for piles so you get funny looks if you buy them in a chemist - I get it online.) It reduces inflammation. Obviously if it doesn't respond within a few days, then get the vet. The odd one will need draining.

Thank you so much for your reply and suggestions.

Is it normal for it to get less squishy and a bit more firm? I had a feel of it today and has got noticeably smaller but feels a bit firmer.
