Is anyone using Hemp for bedding?

Bought some the other day cos no shavings avaialble.

Cost about £2 a bag more, seems to smell a bit horrible and be quite harsh feeling, but on the other hand is quite absorbent.

Interested to know how other people find it, if you use less than shavings in the long run?

I lost my pony to impaction colic, we are sure this was caused by him eating hemp bedding. I won't use it again.

brillian stuff, less dusty than shavings and forms a better base - we only use one bag a week so works out the same or cheaper tha shavings. I know that it has caused occasional problems but we spray it with jeyes fluid first and it is fine then

Really sorry to hear what happened to your pony.

My boy would eat anything so going to clear all the hemp out this afternoon and go back to shavings.

Thats interesting - I was about to buy Hemcore for the winter - I hadnt heard that it was appetising to horses............I cant imagine why as it is coarse and not tasty! In fact my two horses dont eat their bedding so for all the benefits I will probably go ahead. All shavings - even the best are dusty and I am fed up with them..........

It is brilliant in the lorry turbobert. Don't get the dustiness as with shavings, and v absorbent if horsie has a pee (our mares would never be so rude as to pee in their lorry, however ben delights in flooding it every chance he gets).
If you can get it at a good price, then would be great in stable too, but we get shavings 4 pallets at a time at a v good price so can't see hubby agreeing to swap.
